Key takeaways
- .ae domains are managed by the .ae Domain Administration (.aeDA), set up by TDRA.
- You register through an .aeDA accredited registrar or its reseller.
- Names are allocated first come, first served, for license periods of one to five years.
- co.ae requires a UAE trade license, free zone license or UAE trademark.
- A domain doesn't give trademark rights: register the brand with MoET too.
How .ae registration works
TDRA set up the .ae Domain Administration (.aeDA) to manage the .ae domain. You don't register with .aeDA directly: you choose an accredited registrar or one of its resellers. Names go to whoever applies first and meets the eligibility rules.
Under .aeDA's domain name policy, license periods are one, two, three, four or five years. Names must be 2 to 63 characters, can't start or end with a dash, and can't include spaces. Some names are on a reserved list and need authorisation.
.ae or co.ae: which you can register
| Domain | Who it's for | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| .ae | Anyone | No documentary evidence required |
| co.ae | Commercial entities trading in the UAE | UAE trade license, free zone license, or UAE trademark application or registration |
| net.ae | IT service providers in the UAE | UAE trade license (including free zone for IT services) or UAE trademark for IT |
| org.ae | UAE not-for-profit organisations | Registration certificate or authority letter |
For co.ae, the name must relate to a company in which you hold 50% or more, or control, according to the policy.
Domains and trademarks work together
A domain is a license to use an address; it doesn't give exclusive rights to the brand. Trademark rights come from MoET registration. Because co.ae accepts a UAE trademark application as eligibility, filing your trademark early also opens that route.
- Register your brand name as a .ae as soon as you settle the name.
- File the trademark with MoET for your main classes.
- Consider the common misspellings of your domain.
- Keep the domain and trademark renewals on the same calendar.
If someone registers your name
.aeDA has a dispute resolution policy and a complaints handling policy, published on its policy page. A registered trademark makes your position much stronger in a dispute, which is another reason to file it early. For legal disputes, instruct a licensed advocate.
