Brand protection: renewals, oppositions and monitoring

Registration is the start of protection, not the end. We help you renew UAE trademarks with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MoET) on time, object to conflicting filings within the 30-day opposition window, and watch for new marks that come close to yours.

Overview

Keeping a UAE trademark working for you

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021, a registered trademark is protected for 10 years from its filing date and can be renewed for further 10-year periods. Renewal is not examined again, but it must be filed within the window the Implementing Regulation sets. If the date passes, the mark is cancelled from its expiry date.

Protection also depends on what happens between renewals. New applications are published in MoET's bulletin before registration, and any interested party, including you, can object within 30 days of publication. If nobody is watching, a similar mark can slip through and become much harder to remove later.

Finally, the register should match reality. Changes of owner name, address or ownership can be recorded with MoET, and a mark left unused for a long continuous period can be cancelled at someone else's request, so use matters as much as filing.

Who it's for

Who it's for

  • 01

Owners with a renewal coming up

We confirm the current renewal window and fees for your mark and file before it closes.

  • 02

    Brands in crowded markets

Food, fashion, beauty and retail brands, where similar names appear often, gain most from regular bulletin checks.

  • 03

    Applicants facing an objection

If a third party has opposed your application, we help you put together a complete, on-time response.

  • 04

    Businesses that have changed

A new address, a new company name or a sale of the brand: the register should be updated to match.

Documents

Documents you'll need

  • Your registration certificate or application number
  • The owner's current commercial license, or identity documents for an individual owner
  • A power of attorney where an agent files for you
  • For oppositions: evidence of your earlier rights and use, such as invoices, packaging and marketing material
  • For a change of ownership: the signed assignment or transfer document

Documents in other languages may need legal translation before MoET will accept them.

Fees and timing

Two fees, shown separately

  • Government fees, paid at cost

Renewal, opposition and recordal fees are set by MoET and paid at cost. We confirm the exact amount before you pay, and our service fee is quoted separately in writing before any work starts.

  • Global Sky PRO service fee

Quoted in writing before we start, so you know the full cost up front.

  • Timing

An opposition must be filed within 30 days of the other mark's publication, so speed matters once a conflict appears. Renewal must be filed within the window the Implementing Regulation sets; we confirm it for your mark and start the paperwork well before it closes.

Good to know

Details that save time

What to do if someone copies your brand

First, find out what stage the other mark is at. If it has just been published, an opposition within the 30-day window is usually the simplest route. If it is already registered, or is simply being used without registration, the options narrow and may involve a cancellation request or court action. That is the point to bring in a licensed advocate.

Keep evidence as you go: dated screenshots, product photos, invoices and any signs of customer confusion. Good records help whichever route you take.

Common gaps in brand protection

  • Renewal slips because the person who filed the mark has left the business
  • The brand trades mainly under a logo that was never filed
  • The mark goes unused for a long stretch, inviting a non-use cancellation request
  • The register still shows an old owner name or address after a restructure

Ask on WhatsApp
When does my UAE trademark need renewing?

Every 10 years, counted from the filing date of the original application. Renewal must be filed within the window set by the trademark Implementing Regulation; if it lapses, the mark is cancelled from its expiry date. Renewal is not examined again. We confirm the current window and MoET fees for your mark and file before the deadline.

What can I do if someone copies my brand?

Act quickly and check the other mark's status. If it has just been published, you can oppose it within 30 days of publication. If it is already registered or simply in use, the options may include a cancellation request or court action, which need a licensed advocate. We prepare filings and organise your evidence; we do not give legal advice.

How do trademark oppositions work?

Once MoET accepts an application, it publishes the mark in its bulletin, and any interested party can object within 30 days. The objection sets out why the mark conflicts with earlier rights. MoET then reviews it alongside the applicant's response and issues a decision. We prepare and file the paperwork and track every deadline for you.

Can I renew my UAE trademark after it has expired?

Yes, but only for a short time: at the time of writing, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MoET) accepts renewal up to 6 months after the protection period ends, at a higher fee than an on-time renewal. The normal window is the tenth and final year of protection. If neither window is used, the mark is treated as cancelled from its expiry date, and protecting the brand again means a new application with fresh examination.

How much does it cost to renew a trademark in the UAE?

At the time of writing, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MoET) lists AED 6,500 to renew a trademark during its tenth year: an AED 750 publication fee plus an AED 5,750 final renewal fee. Renewing within 6 months after expiry raises the final renewal fee to AED 6,500, and marks used for monitoring or inspection carry higher fees. MoET lists an average of one working day for the service. Government fees are paid at cost, and our fee is quoted separately in writing.

Can my UAE trademark be cancelled if I stop using it?

Yes, any interested party can ask the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MoET) to cancel a trademark that has not been used for five consecutive years, under Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021. The law makes an exception where emergency circumstances prevented use. Keep dated evidence of use, such as invoices, packaging, website pages and advertising, for the goods or services you registered, so you can respond to a request. Renewing on time does not protect a mark you have stopped using.

Do I need to record a trademark sale or license with MoET?

A sale or transfer must be recorded to bind third parties, but a license agreement does not have to be. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021, a transfer of ownership or a mortgage of the mark cannot be enforced against third parties until it is entered in the Ministry of Economy and Tourism (MoET) register and published. A license to use the mark must be in writing and documented, while recording it is optional. We prepare the recordal and any legal translation it needs.
